Selling on Facebook and WhatsApp vs your own website

13 October 2026 · 3 min read · by the Ceylumen team

Selling through Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp is the fastest way to start, and for a new seller it is often enough. You need your own website when orders arrive faster than you can answer messages, when payments get hard to track, or when you want customers to find you through Google. The two work best together: social media brings people in, and the website takes the order.

What social selling does well

  • It costs nothing to start. A page and a phone are enough.
  • Customers are already there. You do not have to bring them anywhere.
  • It is personal. A quick reply builds trust that an advert cannot.

If you sell a few items a day, this is a sensible way to work.

Where it starts to hurt

The problems arrive with success, not failure.

Problem What it looks like
Too many messages "Price?", "Available?", "Delivery to Kandy?" asked fifty times a day
Lost orders An order agreed at midnight, forgotten by morning
Payment checking Matching bank slips to chats by hand
No stock control Selling the last item twice
No records No easy answer to "what did I sell this month?"
You do not own the audience A page can be restricted, and reach changes whenever the platform decides
Invisible on Google Someone searching for your product never sees a social post

Each of these is a job a website does by itself.

What your own website adds

  • Prices, stock and delivery fees are on the page, so the common questions answer themselves
  • Orders are recorded the moment they are placed, with the customer's details
  • Payment is confirmed automatically for card payments, and cash on delivery is tracked
  • Stock goes down with each sale
  • You can be found on Google, at any hour, by people who have never heard of you
  • It is yours. Your domain, your customer list, your rules

The honest downsides of a website

A website is not free and does not sell by itself.

  • There is a cost: the software, a domain and hosting
  • An empty site with no visitors sells nothing; you still need to bring people to it
  • Someone has to keep products and stock up to date

This is why the answer is rarely "leave social media". It is "send social media somewhere better than your inbox".

How to use both together

  1. Keep posting where your customers are.
  2. Put your shop link in every profile and every post.
  3. When someone asks the price, reply with the product link. It answers the question and lets them order.
  4. Use a WhatsApp chat button on the site for people who still want to talk.
  5. Run offers (a voucher, a flash sale) on the website and announce them on social media.

When is the right time to add a website?

Add one when any of these is true:

  • You answer the same questions many times a day
  • You have lost or mixed up an order in the last month
  • You want to take card payments
  • You want customers from Google, not only from followers
  • You want to sell while you are asleep

A quick way to get there

Ceylumen Commerce is a ready-made online shop that goes on your own domain. Products, stock, orders, card payments, cash on delivery, order emails and a WhatsApp chat button are already built. It costs from LKR 2,990 a month hosted for you, or LKR 69,999 once to own it.

The short answer

Use social media to be found and to talk; use your own website to take the order, the payment and the record. Add the website when messages, payments or stock become too much to handle by hand.
